Say Goodbye to Scuff Marks!

Ever wonder why your gym teacher never let you wear street shoes during gym class? It probably was because of SCUFF MARKS! My years as a school administrator have taught me that if you want to remove scuff marks from tile, hardwood or vinyl flooring, use a method proven effective by experienced custodians. For the endless supply of scuffs they encountered, they turned to tennis balls for their solution.

Using a tennis ball may seems strange, but the trick to removing scuff marks in your home is to choose the proper cleaning method that will do the job without harming your floor. That's why the tennis ball is the perfect tool. You will find that the textured surface of the ball makes an excellent, non-chemical cleaner that will safely remove scuff marks.

Here's how it works.
  • For smaller scuffs, simply use the ball in your hand to rub along the mark. The ball's abrasive “felt” exterior will quickly and safely remove the scuff.
  • For larger areas requiring more effort, cut a small “X” in the tennis ball and insert the end of a broom handle or stick into the ball. The handle will allow you to clean from the standing position enabling you to apply more pressure while rubbing along the scuffs.
  • Important tip: The tennis ball you choose does not necessarily have to be new, it just needs to be “clean”.

So try using tennis balls when facing challenging scuff marks and let me know how it works for you!

Frustrated from the endless wiping to remove streaks when window cleaning?

You’re not alone! But for me, that ended several years ago when I learned a trick that transformed how I clean windows. I discovered a secret weapon...NEWSPAPER!  Believe it or not, that paper we throw away turns out to be one of the best tools for cleaning.  Here are the steps for getting sparkling clean windows using everyday newspaper.

  • Spray the window with your favorite window cleaner. I found that most products work equally well.
  • With a crumpled sheet of dry newspaper, begin to wipe the window in a circular motion.  As the newspaper becomes highly saturated with the cleaner and dirt, switch to a clean sheet to wipe away the remaining cleaner.
  • Your windows should come out spotless and the ink from the newsprint will leave a film that is resistant to dirt.
  • Note. Since there is ink in the newspaper and a small amount will get on your hand while cleaning, you should wear a disposable glove or wash your hands when finished.
Extra tips:
  • For those hard-to-reach corners of windows, use an old toothbrush or Q-tip to remove the built-up dirt before wiping.
  • I use this same cleaning process on mirrors and car windows. As an added bonus, when used on car windows the ink works as a repellent causing water to bead up and roll off during rainstorms. It really works just like the costly rain repellant products!

So try it out and tell me how newspaper works for you!
