Florida... A Pineapple Paradise?

Did you know that pineapples can be grown in Florida by just planting the top? They grow easily and require very little care.

Here are some growing tips.
  • Cut off the crown of the pineapple about 1/4 inch below the base. (Some people just rip the crown off)
  • Remove several layers of the smallest leaves at the base as pictured below.
  • Remove the remainder of the pineapple fruit at the base of the crown exposing the roots. The roots look like small bumps around the stem's perimeter
  • Let it air dry in the shade for at least a day or two.
  • Plant just the crown in well-drained soil that receives full sunlight. Completely bury the entire root area up to the first few rows of leaves.

  • Water 1 - 2 times a week for the first month or two. Make sure the soil dries out between watering. Pineapples are tolerant of dry soils but are not of soils that stay wet or flooded.
  • Once planted, they require very little care.

You can expect fruit between 18 – 36 months after planting. When the fruit ripens, it turns from green to yellow from the base to the top. A sweet aroma can be smelled when ripening which also attracts animals who may try to eat it, so watch them carefully when they begin to ripen.

Happy pineapple gardening!
