Mirror Mirror...Off The Wall?

Have you ever experienced one of those days when you looked into the mirror and didn't like what you saw? Well, what if when you looked into the mirror, it wasn't there? Unfortunately, that was just my experience during a recent home watch visit. Upon arrival, I discovered a 4' by 5' bathroom mirror had fallen from the wall. It shattered into a thousand pieces, some even being propelled six feet down the hallway.  Amazingly, there was no damage to any of the fixtures, just some minor scratches to the door and wall.

Can you imagine being away for several months only to discover this disaster upon your return? Who needs that level of stress and anxiety when you are looking to enjoy your home?

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER REASON WHY

How's Your Flapper?

5/17/2014

Annoyed by your toilet? Does it wake you up at night or bother you during the day? You know what I mean; that annoying sound of trickling water only to be followed by the sound of rushing water as the valve opens to refill the tank. Water leaking from your toilet is not only annoying, but over time will cost you money in increased utility bills. The good news is that the fix is very simple.

First, determine whether your toilet is leaking by adding red food coloring to the water in the tank. Check back in a couple of hours to see if the water in the bowl has turned reddish. If it has, water is leaking from your tank into the bowl. This is very common and is usually caused by an old flapper needing replaced. As a flapper ages it gets hard, allowing water to seep around the edges and into the bowl. This is the trickling sound that you hear.

To change your toilet’s flapper, first shut off the water supply by simply turning the valve located directly behind the toilet. Remove the tank lid and flush the toilet to empty the tank. Remove the old flapper and chain and replace it with the new set. (Replacement flappers are easy to find in any store that carries hardware supplies.) Now you are ready to turn the water supply back on and test the new flapper. It’s as easy as that.
